Steroids 12/1/15

The ER doctor gave Mia some steroids to fight her allergic reaction. Her prescribed her a 5ml dose of prednisone two times a day for three days. He warned us that they can make kids hyper. Mia runs circles in the living room every evening, so I'm used to her having excess energy. I thought I was prepared.

The day after she seemed relatively unaffected by the medicine. She was acting like herself, re-enacting scenes from her favorite Disney movies. I noticed some rosy-ness in her cheeks and I thought she looked a little chunkier than usual but I wasn't terribly concerned. I've heard that steroids can make kids retain water.

The next day she was overly clingy to me all day. Every step I took she headed me off so I would pick her up. She grabbed tightly to the shoulders of my coat as we walked into the movie theater to see the Good Dinosaur. Popcorn was a good distraction allowing her to sit in her own seat. When we got home she was running laps around the coffee table. Laughing at scenes only seen by her imagination.

The laughing didn't stop until bedtime. I heard a thumping, I thought it was my dog Gus. She often finds an itch that makes her hind leg stomp rhythmically against the floor. When I realized Gus was in the basement I went into Mia's room to see that it was her making the noise. Quitely laying in her crib, wide awake in the wee hours of the morning. She probably never went to sleep.

I brought her into bed and she finally nodded off around 6 in the morning. I got out of bed and made myself some coffee. Around 9 I heard her lauging hysterically. I went into the room expecting her to be awake jumping on the bed. I was a little thrown when I found that she was hysterical even in her sleep. The whole day she seemed like a different child. Unable to calm herself, acting almost manic. Her cheeks were swollen to looks like those of a chipmunk.
