Side Eye 11/3/15

I was looking at Mia the other day and I realized that she is already making some of the faces that she will make her whole life. We're all born with mannerisms that are unique, and we carry them with us our whole life, whether we realize it or not. Mia will often look out the corner of her eye with a suspicious gaze.

I don't really know if she is looking at something, or thinking of something. She'll be talking to herself and then all of the sudden her mouth puckers and she directs her attention to her peripheral vision.

If she is looking at something, my guess is it's light reflecting off of something shiny. And if she's thinking of something, my guess is it's something that can't be put into words.

Mia is a very visual thinker. She will often get overwhelmed and start crying when we walk into a department store. It's sensory overload, the racks of clothing, glass cases and people can send her into an anxiety attack.

Maybe the side eye is just a way of managing her anxiety. She will study things from the side so her brain can limit the amount of information it's taking in. I think of it like when three different people are talking to you at once, your only hope of understanding anything is to focus on one person at a time.
